HATS Shakhrisabz/Samarkand
Located fifty miles south of Samarkand, Shakhrisabz is perhaps best known historically as the birthplace of Timur (Tamerlane). But in the textile world, the city is renowned for its fine embroidery, especially suzanis and hats. The hats are embroidered in small cross-stitches (iroki) that cover the entire surface. Even smaller iroki are called tirma. Sometimes the stitches are so fine that a magnifying glass is needed to see them clearly.
